Step into 87-year-old Arild Fredericksen's studio and you enter into a fanciful fairy tale. Every surface is covered with the organized clutter of his home-made machines, tools and bits of metal - either in raw form, or partly cut and twisted into hearts and curves - ready to be assembled into ice cream chair and table sets, wine bottle holders, votive candle holders, banisters - almost anything that can be created from twisted and bent metal. Arild is a genius when it comes to looking at a design, and figuring out how to make it. The finished pieces, a blend of artistry and fine craftsmanship, are sure to delight generations of users. But the true value of owning a piece of Fredericksen's work is visiting with this soft-spoken artist, who seems to embody the gentleness our world has lost.
